Between 25th November and 20th December,1914, the 1st Middlesex battalion of 19 Brigade, then with 6th Division, occupied front line trenches 800 yards east and north-east of Houplines, just across the Belgian border from Armentières. These trenches were in very poor conditions, the weather was awful and they suffered constant casualties from snipers and shell fire.
